African-American
Lesbians
African-American lesbians are the focus of an annual four day event
called Lucy and Gail Present Dinah in Color that occurs each year in
April in Palm Springs during the Dinah Shore Weekend. On occasion the
event will leave Palm Springs, like in 2010, when it travels to Las Vegas.
Hundreds of African-American lesbians come together not only for a fabulous
four day party but for a stimulating cultural experience that reinforces
and validates the African-American lesbian experience and that of other
women of color. Lucy and Gail’s Dinah in Color is designed to cater
to the social, intellectual and cultural needs of women of color. It
is a “party with a purpose.”
Writers, dancers, filmmakers, singers, musicians and poets all make
their way to Dinah in Color to perform and provide a backdrop to develop
social networks of black women who comes from all across the United States
as well as the U.K., Canada and the Caribbean.
The African-American lesbian experience is the United States can often
be an isolated one with black women finding themselves on the outside
of both their ethnic communities and the gay community where they live.
At Dinah in Color there is an opportunity for African-American lesbians
to begin to define their own political and social agenda that best serves
their special needs.
There is a Blues Party and a Jazz Concert and ample time to relax and
enjoy the sun. It is the ultimate experience in entertainment for African-American
lesbians who want their party to have a cultural edge and to meet women
beyond their usual circle of friends.
